I met Rachael during our first year together at University of Michigan in 2000. We shared a love for our home state California and travel. Summer before Sophomore year of college we drove from LA back to Ann Arbor together stopping in states across the way, driving through the night existing on fun fruits and diet coke. Since that trip the adventures have never stopped.
After college she moved to NYC & me to Chicago, so we commit to meeting at least once a year on the first weekend of February somewhere in the US we've never been before.
This year we choose the Florida Keys.
We met in Miami and rented a Mustang convertible. Then started the drive on the overseas highway down through the keys. With the gulf on side and the Atlantic on the other, sun out and a light breeze it was gorgeous. Check out National Geographic's guide: Road Trip
The drive is about 4hrs, there are 42 bridges between the mainland the Key West, making for fantastic views. Make sure to stop at Key Fisheries for the Lobster Reuben and watch boats come with fresh catches. Don't miss Mrs G's Ice Cream Shop on Islamorada.
It was an awesome weekend filled with sunsets, ocean side massages, gulf oysters, live music,
a drag show of course, key lime pie, Hemingway, 6 toed cats
and lots of time to catch up together.
When I'm with Rachael I remember how genuine friendships help make sense of our lives
and affirm the joy we share together.
